Archival footage produced by and for Inuit.

Preserve – Treasure – For All

The Inuit Broadcasting Corporation (IBC) has preserved a valuable collection of historic films and video materials for approximately 40 years. This collection includes nearly 9,000 hours of footage and completed programs, valued at about $60 million.

Since the 1970s, our videographers have documented a significant new chapter in Inuit history, capturing events from an Inuit perspective. They have recorded the transition from dog teams to digital phones, chronicled the division of territories, the creation of key national Inuit organizations, the concept and signing of Inuit land claims, the establishment of Nunavut, and the evolution of a new political and socio-cultural environment. This archived work represents a truly unique period in history.

In addition to our current and future IBC productions, this archival material profoundly contributes to promoting and preserving Inuit language and culture, reflecting various aspects of Inuit identity. The importance of this irreplaceable cultural treasure cannot be overstated; it is invaluable not only to Inuit beneficiaries but also to many around the world. We particularly want this material to be accessible to the communities we serve, especially the youth, so that they can continue to learn from their elders.
