Qanuq Isumavit Cancelled

December 18, 2006 – Inuit Broadcasting Corporation’s (IBC) popular phone in show, Qanuq Isumavit will not be aired during the upcoming broadcast season. Due to technical constraints at APTN, the network decided that it must charge a fee to IBC to air the live show, rather than pay a licence fee to broadcast Qanuq Isumavit. Unfortunately, IBC is not in a position to proceed in this fashion. In the fall, IBC was informed at the last minute that because of APTN's relocation of its master control room in Iqaluit, the show could not be scheduled for the fall season, but would resume in the winter season. Late in November, IBC was informed of the new policy to charge a fee for airtime.

"At this time, regrettably, we cannot go ahead with Qanuq Isumavit. We are aware that this show is very popular and extremely important for Nunavummiut and Inuit in other regions and we will continue to work to bring this show back to air" said Okalik Eegeesiak, President of IBC. "It is unfortunate that this vehicle to discuss issues of concern will not be available", she continued.
